Volunteer Manual
This wiki page is an online version (and thus more up-to-date) of the Volunteer Manual that is found behind the counter in the store. Since projects and problems come and go, you are very much encouraged to adjust postings, post questions, and so on as needed. Thanks and enjoy!
New Volunteers
So you're a new Ibooks volunteer. Welcome! Here are some important things to be aware of before you jump into the gritty details of how to run the store.
One, Internationalist Books is a COOPERATIVE. In simple terms (the only kind I understand) a cooperative is a business that is owned by a segment of the community. If you've shopped in the store before, you might remember being asked if you are or would like to become a member. This is to say, a member/owner of the store who may participate in the general direction of the store, including a vote in annual board of directors elections, as well as the opportunity to become one of the store directors. As long as you are an active volunteer, you are a member.
Two, Ibooks functions as a COLLECTIVE. Simply, again, a collective is a business that is owned and run by its workers. Ibooks' workers include a paid manager, a paid volunteer coordinator (as needed and/or available), and a ten-gallon hatful of volunteers. To quote a certain movie starring a certain Brad Pitt, you decide your own level of involvement. If your cuppa tea is simply running the register, then do it well: thank you. If you're interested in organizing programs, then organize away: much appreciated. As a worker-owner, your sky is our limit, and we heartily encourage you to take on as much as you want. Just ask someone, and we'll get you started.
Three, Ibooks is a genuine 501(c)3 federally-recognized nonprofit business. This means that donations are tax deductible, and that we are able to fulfill community service requirements... and so on.
So here you go!
